Deep Purple live in Laval

if you’re the type that enjoys seeing and hearing 70-year-old rockers belting out ‘70s arena rock, coming up fast is the monster grouping of Deep Purple with special guests Kansas and Jefferson Starship on Monday, Aug 17 at Place Bell in Laval.

Having sold more than 100 million albums and filled global stadiums and arenas for decades, Deep Purple’s influence is still highly regarded. The band, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, are true ‘rock royalty’. The celebrated line up of Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice, Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore were responsible for creating many of the defining rock albums of the early 1970s, including Made in Japan, which I owned and which is universally accepted as one of the most important and influential live albums of all time.

With a career spanning five decades, Kansas has established itself as one of America’s iconic classic rock bands. Carry On Wayward Son continues to be one of the top five most played songs on classic rock radio, and Dust in the Wind has been played on the radio more than three million times.  I still love that stuff.

Jefferson Starship (We Built This City, Sara, and Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now) is an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1974 as the structural and musical successor to the 1960s psychedelic pioneer Jefferson Airplane (White Rabbit and Somebody to Love). Co-founded by core members like Paul Kantner and Grace Slick, the group evolved from Kantner's sci-fi solo project into a major arena-rock powerhouse of the 1970s and 1980s. Current band lineup includes David Freiberg (Co-founding guitarist and singer), Cathy Richardson (Lead vocalist and guitarist), Donny Baldwin (Drummer), Chris Smith (Keyboardist), and Jude Gold (Lead guitarist).

Engelbert Humperdinck at 90

If you’re the type that enjoys seeing 90-year-old crooners belting out ‘70s lounge lizard anthems, Engelbert Humperdinck brings The Celebration Tour to town for two nights in October. On Thursday and Friday Oct. 8-9, the 90-year-old "King of Romance" — who somehow continues to deliver 90-minute sets to sold-out audiences worldwide — will take the stage at Théâtre Maisonneuve in Place des Arts.  With over 140 million records sold and a recent surge in popularity driven by soundtracks like Marvel’s Moon Knight and Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, these shows represent an opportunity to experience a living legend taking a well-deserved victory lap. "The stage is my home," stated Humperdinck. "Canada has always been a highlight of my world tours, and I am thrilled to share this 90th-year celebration with the fans … who have been with me… from the beginning through every chapter." I tip my hat to the. I really do.
