SHREVEPORT, La. — Shreveport police are reporting encouraging declines in several crime categories this year, but say traffic fatalities and domestic violence remain major concerns.During this week’s “Answering the Call,” Cpl. Chris Bordelon discussed the department’s year-to-date crime statistics, calling them a “report card” that helps officers identify successes and areas needing improvement. One of the most concerning trends is the number of fatal crashes across Caddo Parish, said Bordelon. The parish has recorded 30 fatal crashes so far in 2026, leading the state by a significant margin. He noted that many of the crashes involve pedestrians, distracted driving, or impaired driving. At the same time, Shreveport has seen notable decreases in several property crimes, including vehicle thefts, vehicle burglaries and residential burglaries. Bordelon said those categories are approaching some of their lowest levels in nearly a decade. Shootings have also declined compared to previous years. However, homicides remain slightly higher than this time last year. According to Bordelon, more than 60% of the city’s homicides in 2026 have been linked to domestic violence incidents involving household members. The majority happened on April 19 with the murder of eight children. As students return to the classroom, Bordelon also reminded drivers that school zone speed cameras are active when school zones are in operation. Police are encouraging motorists to slow down and use extra caution to help keep students safe during the first weeks of the school year.
