SHREVEPORT, La. — As hot, dry conditions increase the risk of fires across the region, the American Red Cross is calling for more volunteers to help families affected by one of Louisiana's most common disasters: home fires. While many people associate the Red Cross with major events such as hurricanes and floods, Executive Director Karen McCoy says home fires are the organization's most frequent emergency response.“Most people think of hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding when they think of the Red Cross. But actually, our number one disaster and the one we respond to most here are our home fires,” McCoy said.According to the Red Cross, teams across Louisiana have responded to more than 650 home fires so far this year, providing emergency shelter, financial assistance, emotional support, and recovery resources to affected families. The organization says no prior experience is required to volunteer. Individuals can assist directly with disaster responses, support operations remotely, help coordinate services, or participate in programs such as smoke alarm installations.“We really have a position for anyone, and you don't have to have any experience,” McCoy said. “Just kind of the need to want to help someone.”Anyone interested in volunteering can learn more or sign up at redcross.org/volunteer.
