AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is ordering a review of how public school districts spend taxpayer money, directing state officials to examine whether education funds are being used appropriately.
Abbott has instructed state Comptroller Don Huffines to review the budgets of at least four school districts across Texas. The governor’s office did not identify which districts will be included in the review.
Texas is spending $105 billion on public education, and Abbott said the reviews are intended to determine whether districts are using those funds for lawful and intended purposes.
The governor also said the review should assess whether taxpayer dollars are directly supporting teachers and students in classrooms.
Abbott has requested a final report by Dec. 31, ahead of the next legislative session scheduled to begin in January.
