SHREVEPORT, La. — Dozens of runners and walkers gathered at Mall St. Vincent on Saturday morning to participate in the annual SportsSpectrum Firecracker 5K.

The Independence Day tradition sent participants through the South Highlands course to celebrate the holiday while raising money for medical research. Proceeds from the race benefit the Spine Institute of Louisiana Foundation, an organization that funds medical research and education.

While the race has grown into a major holiday tradition for the area, organizers say it remains rooted in honoring the lives of three longtime SportsSpectrum supporters: Ran Kiper, Jim White and Robin Fell.
