SHREVEPORT, La. -- A thief or group of thieves tried to steal an ATM from a Shreveport credit union early Monday, using chains and a pickup truck, but the attempt was unsuccessful, police said.

The incident happened at Campus Federal Credit Union at 1555 East 70th Street. According to Shreveport police, the suspects used a truck and chains in an attempt to pull the heavy ATM away from the building.

The suspects were unable to remove it and left the scene, abandoning the pickup truck. Police towed away the pickup, which had been reported stolen.

Shreveport police Cpl. Chris Bordelon said investigators are working to collect evidence from the truck and the ATM.

“They were not successful today. However, they did cause damage to the ATM,” Bordelon said.

Police also plan to look into DNA and video evidence that could help identify the suspects.

Bordelon said investigators believe the suspects may be known to law enforcement and could have attempted similar crimes in the past.

The ATM was taken away for processing and to make sure it was not damaged further.

No money was taken from the ATM.
