BOSSIER CITY, La. — Bossier City officials are issuing a stern warning to residents as summer temperatures reach dangerous levels across the region.

Authorities say local residents often underestimate the heat because they are accustomed to the climate. However, officials warn that the combination of high temperatures and humidity can escalate into a dangerous situation quickly.

Riley Burns with the Bossier City Fire Department said many long-time residents have a "terrible mindset" regarding the local weather.

"I think a lot of the locals that have lived here their entire lives believe that they can take the heat," Burns said. "But that is a terrible mindset to have. People forget that the humidity on top of that temperature is so strenuous and can be so dangerous when you're not paying attention."

Residents are urged to stay in the shade and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. The risk of heat-related issues is highest during peak UV hours, which occur between noon and 3 p.m.

For those whose air conditioning fails, officials recommend visiting local libraries or the Pierre Bossier Mall to find relief from the heat.

Safety officials also reminded the public to check on elderly neighbors and emphasized that children and pets should never be left alone in a parked vehicle.
