SHREVEPORT, La. — The Caddo Parish Animal Shelter is at maximum capacity and asking for public help as staff members care for more than 200 animals under one year old.

Shelter officials warned that without immediate adoptions or rescues, they may have to make difficult decisions. Many of the puppies and kittens have been in kennels for more than two months.

The facility is housing 176 puppies and kittens under six months old, along with 35 juvenile animals under one year old. Some of the young pets have been at the shelter for 30 to 70 days.

"It's really hard to care for that many animals," said Kimberly Freeman, adoption and volunteer coordinator. "And we do the best we can to try to get everyone out through either adoption or rescue. We try to reunite people with their animals who are missing their pets. We always tell people to come in person and see if they're here. So we do everything we can to try to get them out of here and have a positive outcome."

Officials urge owners of missing pets and prospective adopters to visit the shelter in person to help reduce overcrowding.
