NATCHITOCHES, La. — Construction work is scheduled to begin Wednesday on Second Street, from Church Street to Touline Street, and on Touline Street, from Front Street to Fifth Street, city officials said Thursday in a news release.
The project consists of removing the existing deteriorated concrete pavement and constructing new pavement in these areas. Additional work includes replacing existing water and sewer lines and storm drain pipes, as well as constructing curb ramps that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The first phase of work, which is expected to take approximately three weeks to complete, will be located on Second Street from Church Street to Trudeau Street. During this time, this section of Second Street will be closed to all traffic, including on-street parking. During approximately the last seven days of this phase, the intersection of Second Street at Church Street also will be closed to all traffic to install a new sewer manhole and tie the new sewer line into it.
Upon completion of the Phase 1 work, the next phase will take place on Second Street from Trudeau Street to Touline Street, followed by work on Touline Street from Second Street to Fourth Street.
During these work phases and the accompanying street closures, traffic must detour around the work sites using adjacent city streets. Drivers who normally park along these streets to access nearby buildings must park elsewhere while work is completed in each street segment.
Except for short periods while the new water and sewer lines are tied into existing utility lines, water and sewer service to adjacent businesses, residences, and other buildings will be maintained throughout the project.
The work is being funded under the State Capital Outlay Program, with 75% of the costs paid by the state. The contractor is Skyplex Trucking, LLC, of Natchitoches, and the contract amount is $2.3 million.
