HOMER, La. — Heavy rainfall across the ArkLaTex has prompted officials in Claiborne Parish to close Lake Claiborne as rising water levels continue to threaten infrastructure.

Floodwaters have covered sections of highways 2 and 79, causing significant travel concerns. Claiborne Parish Sheriff Sam Dowies issued a warning to residents to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

"We ask everybody to stay off the roads as much as they can and stay out of the low-lying areas," Dowies said.

The sheriff’s office is urging residents to reserve emergency lines for critical situations only.
