MANSFIELD, La. — At DeSoto Parish Schools, learning extends far beyond the traditional classroom.
Through the "DeSoto Works" program, high school students across the parish are applying skills learned throughout the school year in real-world working environments alongside local businesses, industry professionals, and community partners.
Launched in 2020, the initiative targets seniors who have completed their required coursework, earned an advanced credential or state bundle, and have at least two consecutive periods free on their schedules. The program allows students to build technical skills, develop professional habits, explore potential career pathways, and gain hands-on experience before graduation.
Preparing students for the future workforce
School leaders emphasize that the internship model aligns directly with the district's "Portrait of a Graduate" initiative and broader educational mission. By connecting classroom instruction with authentic workplace settings, the district aims to fill local workforce vacancies with qualified, well-prepared graduates.
"At the end of the day, one of our greatest responsibilities is to ensure that our students are more than just academically prepared, but to ensure that they are able to lead and succeed and really contribute and make a difference in the world," a representative noted regarding the district's focus on career-connected learning.
Organizers add that the initiative fulfills the district’s mission to instill responsibility and provide opportunities to excel.
"The more students that we can help and help them figure out their pathways in life, we're doing our job here," district leaders stated.
