SHREVEPORT, La. - Gardeners looking to add vibrant color to their landscapes can turn to bougainvillea. Still, experts say getting those eye-catching blooms requires the right balance of sunlight, water, and fertilizer.

During this week's KTBS Garden Club segment, Jennifer McGimsey and Julie Rogers of Akin's Nursery discuss the secrets behind producing abundant bougainvillea blooms.

According to Rogers, there are three key ingredients for encouraging bougainvillea to bloom.

First, the tropical plant needs plenty of sunlight, requiring at least six hours of full sun each day. Second, gardeners should avoid overwatering. Finally, proper fertilization is essential.

"You want to fertilize with a high middle number, high phosphorus to encourage the blooms," said Rogers.

Both water-soluble and granular fertilizers can be effective options for bougainvillea growers.

Experts say following these simple steps can help homeowners enjoy the colorful bracts of bougainvillea throughout the summer season.
