SHREVEPORT, La. - A resilient Louisiana rose with an extraordinary history has officially earned statewide recognition.

During this week's KTBS Garden Club segment at Akin's Nursery, gardening expert Jennifer McGimsey highlighted the Peggy Martin Rose, which was recently designated as the official state rose of Louisiana by the state Legislature.

The Peggy Martin rose is known not only for its beauty but also for its incredible survival story. The thornless climbing rose gained national attention in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

"After the floodwaters receded from Hurricane Katrina, the Peggy Martin was still growing outside of Ms. Peggy Martin's shed," said McGimsey. "So, in her honor, they named this beautiful pink rose in her name."

The plant's survival became a symbol of resilience and recovery, leading horticulturists to propagate and share the rose across the country.

Gardeners appreciate the rose for its pale pink blooms, vigorous growth, and low-maintenance nature. Unlike many traditional roses that require extensive care, the Peggy Martin rose is relatively easy to grow and returns year after year.

"She can climb, you know, seven or eight feet very quickly and doesn't take quite as much care as a lot of your traditional roses," said McGimsey.

Its rapid growth and abundant blooms make it a favorite among both experienced gardeners and beginners.
