SHREVEPORT, La. — Maggie Lee’s Closet hosted its annual Khaki Fair at the Highland Center on Friday, continuing a legacy of kindness that honors a young girl’s memory.
The school uniform giveaway is part of the Maggie Lee for Good Movement. The initiative was created to honor 12-year-old Maggie Lee Henson, who passed away in 2009 following a church bus accident. In the years since the tragedy, her parents have turned their grief into a mission to help others.
"It's amazing how God can bring good things out of your worst day," said Jinny Henson, co-founder of Maggie Lee's Closet. "So we started with $500, and now we have Maggie Lee's Closet, which is open Monday through Friday, noon to 4 p.m. and then once a year we do this Khaki Fair."
The ministry focuses on performing acts of kindness throughout the city, ensuring students have the clothing they need to succeed in the classroom.
"Being older and experiencing everything, you know," said Jack Henson, Maggie's brother. "It makes me want to do it in our city and in our life and make that something significant that we do."
The initiative continues to serve as a way for the family and the community to turn a tragedy into a helping hand for those in need.
