SHREVEPORT, La. - Participants in the Mayor's Summer Internship Program spent Wednesday morning giving back to the community through a service project at the Mooretown Community Faith Garden.
The interns worked from 8 a.m. until noon, helping improve the neighborhood garden by building raised garden beds, removing debris, pulling weeds, and spreading mulch throughout the property.
The effort supports Ms. Ruby's garden, a community resource that provides a welcoming space for residents in the Mooretown neighborhood.
City officials say the project gave participants in the Mayor's Summer Internship Program an opportunity to put the principles of public service into practice while making a lasting impact on the community.
"They're usually out in their departments," said Mayor Tom Arcenaux. "This gives them a chance to do something together and learn the skills and value of teamwork as well as community service."
The improvements made during Wednesday's volunteer effort are expected to enhance the community garden and help ensure it continues serving Mooretown residents for years to come.
