SHREVEPORT, La. — For residents living near the intersection of Savanna Drive and Summer Grove Drive, a growing hazard on the road has become a daily frustration.

A persistent sinkhole has claimed a section of the pavement, and neighbors believe they know exactly what triggered the instability.

According to those living in the immediate vicinity, the trouble began back in early January. As a prolonged deep freeze gripped the Arklatex region, the extreme temperatures seemed to affect the utility infrastructure beneath the asphalt.

Residents report that a water pipe burst during the sub-freezing conditions, and while the surface may have initially appeared stable, the relentless flow of water began to erode the soil from underneath.
