SHREVEPORT, La. - As students prepare to return to the classroom, the Shots for Tots program is helping families make sure children are protected and up to date on their vaccinations.

KTBS 3’s Courtney Butts reports the program is bringing mobile vaccination clinics into the community throughout August, making it easier for families to access immunizations before the new school year begins.

Dr. Joseph Bocchini, a pediatric infectious disease specialist with Willis-Knighton Health, says vaccines play an important role in helping children stay safe and healthy by preparing their immune systems to fight off serious infections.

While diseases like measles and chickenpox are less common today, Bocchini says they have not disappeared.

He points to recent measles outbreaks across the country as an example of why staying current on recommended vaccines remains important.

Willis-Knighton’s Shots for Tots program has provided mobile vaccination services in the community since 2001. Bocchini says the goal is to help families who may have difficulty accessing routine immunizations.

Parents with questions or concerns about vaccines are encouraged to speak with their child’s doctor. Pediatricians can help explain recommended vaccine schedules, discuss catch-up vaccinations, and provide trusted information to help families make informed decisions.

Shots for Tots clinic schedule:

  • Clinic hours: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  • Parents should bring their child’s immunization record.

Mobile clinic locations:

  • August 10–12: Willis-Knighton North
  • August 17–19: Willis-Knighton South
  • August 24–26: Willis-Knighton Bossier

The program aims to help students start the school year healthy, protected, and ready to learn.
