SHREVEPORT, La. — The city officially launched its Shreveport America 250 lecture series Wednesday with an educational program focused on the history and significance of Juneteenth.

Held at Southern University at Shreveport, the event featured presenter Dr. Michael Hicks, who detailed the holiday’s impact on both the nation and the local community.

"Well, this is important because as we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we also should take time to consider the second Independence Day in America, which is celebrated in this country on June 19th, our Juneteenth," Hicks said.

The free event marked the beginning of a city-wide series exploring American history.
