SHREVEPORT, La. — A Shreveport police officer is hospitalized with significant injuries after accidentally discharging his service weapon while off duty Sunday morning, according to the Shreveport Police Department.
Department spokesperson Sgt. Chris Bordelon said the officer had just returned home after completing his shift and was unloading items from his vehicle when the weapon accidentally fired.
The bullet hit the officer in the lower leg at a residence on Blom Boulevard, police said.
The officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment. While the injuries are considered significant, officials said the officer is expected to recover.
The officer's name has not been released.
No other injuries were reported.
