SHREVEPORT, La. - A Shreveport police K-9 helped capture a fugitive wanted on felony sex crime charges in New Jersey after the suspect refused to surrender during the execution of an arrest warrant.

The arrest happened Friday while the Shreveport Police Department's K-9 unit was assisting the U.S. Marshals Violent Offender Task Force.

Authorities said 28-year-old Jose F. Caal Pop was wanted in New Jersey on charges that include aggravated sexual assault, sexual battery and molestation of a juvenile. Investigators said he went to Louisiana to avoid arrest.

According to police, officers repeatedly ordered Pop to come out of the home, but he refused.

K-9 Karo was then deployed and tracked the suspect to the second floor of the residence, where the dog apprehended him.

Police said Pop suffered minor injuries during the arrest and was treated at the scene before being taken to the Shreveport City Jail. He is being held pending extradition to New Jersey.
