TEXARKANA, Texas - The Tough Kookie Foundation kicked off its third annual Yellow Pedal Bike Ride on Saturday at Spring Lake Park.
The event benefits childhood cancer patients and their families by giving assistance for anything needed in their battle.
A $5,000 scholarship is also given after the kids graduate high school to spend as they choose.
"We started off with the breast cancer and we saw a need for a lot of children that went through cancer and if they could go through cancer like women went through with breast cancer, we needed to help them," said Logistics Board Member Joe Levingston, Jr. "So, a lot of the mothers that had breast cancer knew some kids that had cancer, so that's why I kind of feel a special calling for children that have to go through that."
Levingston said many children struggle with cancer and they need all the help they can get.
About five children from each school in the Texarkana area is afflicted with cancer at any given time, said Levingston, which is 25 to 30 kids and sadly, some do not survive.
