ELM GROVE, La. — U.S. Highway 71 near Elm Grove has reopened to traffic following a fatal collision and massive train derailment last week, according to the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.
The August 13 crash occurred when an 18-wheeler collided with a train at the Smith Road crossing, resulting in three locomotives and 21 rail cars derailing. One person was killed in the crash, and the train crew was hospitalized for evaluation.
While the roadway is clear, officials urge motorists to slow down as railroad crews continue final cleanup.
