MISSOULA, Mont. – A baby deer wandered up to Missoula Fire Department’s Station 2, and the visit came with a reminder not to touch or handle baby animals.

The station shared that the fawn’s mother was nearby watching, while the little one got used to walking on its own.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks emphasized that baby wild animals are very fragile. Fawns are born without a scent and their spots help with camouflage. The agency also warned that getting too close can stress the animal, and could be dangerous if the mother is nearby.

If a baby wild animal is hurt or truly abandoned, call Montana FWP at (406)-444-9942.

Montana FWP has more information on their website for what to do, and what not to do near baby wild animals.
