HAMILTON, Mont. – Hamilton firefighters rescued a resident from a flaming house on Wednesday night.

The Hamilton Fire Department said it responded to a porch fire west of town at 7:20 p.m. that night. Crews arrived at the scene to find the rear of the house and garage ”fully engulfed with dense smoke,” the department said.

The department said crews learned the occupant of the house was still inside, and they worked with law enforcement at the scene to get them out safely.

Before the first engine arrived at  the scene, the garage roof collapsed and the fire spread through the upper part of the residence, the department said in its report.

While crews at the scene operated hand lines to combat the fire, another part of the structure’s roof collapsed.

The fire department said the majority of the fire was knocked down around 8 p.m. and crews stayed at the scene mopping up hot spots until 11 p.m.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital due to smoke inhalation and another was treated at the scene for heat related stress.

“We would like to thank Corvallis Rural Fire District, Victor Volunteer Fire and EMS, Hamilton Police Department, Ravalli County Sheriff’s Office, Ravalli County Dispatch, Bitterroot Health EMS, King’s Canteen and Northwestern Energy for their help and assistance during the incident,” the Hamilton Fire Department wrote in its report.
