GALLATIN COUNTY, Mont. – The Yellowstone Holiday area of Hebgen Reservoir has been closed down for water-based activities due to increased toxin levels from a harmful algal bloom, according to the Gallatin County Health Department (GCHD).
“Routine monitoring of Hebgen shows the water contains anatoxin-a, a toxin made by certain algae that can make people, pets, and livestock very sick,” GCHD officials stated. “The latest sample results measured twice the closure threshold, so the shoreline is being closed.”
Additionally, the shoreline of Rainbow Point remains closed due to increasing toxin levels, while toxin levels in Corey Springs and Savage Bay remain low despite the presence of algal blooms, according to tests conducted in these areas.
GCHD officials noted that closure signs will be posted at the Yellowstone Holiday area’s public access points to warn any recreationists of the closure.
