Helena, Mont. — Helena city leaders moved a step closer to asking voters to approve new funding aimed at expanding police and fire services.
During a Wednesday meeting, the City Commission tentatively decided to put a $5.3 million levy before voters next spring. City staff said the proposal would pay for additional firefighters and police officers in Helena.
Staff also said demand for public safety services has grown beyond current capacity as Helena’s population increased by 34% since 2000.
Mayor Emily Dean said the levy would respond to that demand and reflect what the community values.
“This levy will help address the public safety needs of our growing community and be a real investment to ensure a safe and thriving Helena now and into the future,” said Mayor Emily Dean.
The City Commission is scheduled to confirm the levy details with a vote in August.
