Judith Basin County, Mont. — Malmstrom Airforce Base service members at one of Montana’s missile alert facilities said the work centers on staying ready to respond at any moment.
The site in Judith Basin County is staffed by a facility manager and security forces personnel. Their role includes armed responses to alarm indications they received.
"What these members do is provide armed responses to any alarm indications that they receive," a source said.
Lt. Col. Keenan Dalrymple, director of operations for the 10th Missile Squadron at Malmstrom Air Force Base, oversees preparation for missile combat crew members and facility managers so they are ready for the mission. He also explained the 10th Missile Squadron has five launch control centers and 50 intercontinental ballistic missiles.
"It’s our job to have those assets ready to be utilized at a moment's notice," Dalrymple said.
Dalrymple explained crew members completed extensive training to stay current on every job they may need to perform while on alert.
Inside the missile alert facility about 100 feet underground, missileers are responsible for 10 launch facilities. They remain on alert all day every day and stand ready to activate missiles and provide combat capability for the nation.
"We’re working with one of the most powerful weapon systems on the planet. So, we’re in a no fail mission. We can’t afford to not succeed," said 1st Lt. William Van Beek of Malmstrom Air Force Base.
Some crew members explained that spending a full week at a missile alert facility can be difficult. One security forces member said the isolation could wear on people.
"Being out here, being by yourself all the time, not really getting to do much until you go out can be dampening on you," said Ty Crawford of the 341st Missile Security Force Squadron.
Crew members said they have access to nutrition options, entertainment and other activities to help manage stress on the job.
"It feels like having a second family because you’re with them 24 hours, posted out seven days," said Rafael Perez-Toscano of the 341st Missile Security Force Squadron.
Some crew members also said they are proud to be part of the local community and feel strong support there.
