LIVINGSTON, Mont. — Livingston is preparing to say goodbye to its longtime city pool after officials announced it will close for good at the end of this summer season.

The city pool opened in 1949 and has served generations of community members in Livingston throughout its 77 years in operation

City officials say operational problems pushed the city to close the pool indefinitely after the current summer season ends.

Michael Skaggs, park superintendent for the City of Livingston, pointed to major repair needs at the facility as a driving force behind the upcoming closure.

“The gutter system’s been broken for many years. We don’t have any return from the gutters; it’s all being drawn from the bottom of the pool, and it’ll take quite a bit to get that repaired,” Skaggs said. “Probably our biggest challenge is a leak that’s on average a thousand gallons an hour, trying to keep chemicals regulated with the fresh water constantly coming in,” he said.

Grant Gager, Livingston city manager, says even with the closure on the horizon, the pool has meant a lot to local families over the years.

“This pool really has been a hub of activity for the community. A lot of our community members learned to swim and really grew up around the pool, my kids included. It’s a special place in the City of Livingston,” Gager said.

City leaders say although the pool is closing, residents will have another option for their aquatic recreation on the way. The new Livingston wellness center is set to be completed by February of 2027 and will include both a lap pool and recreational pool.

The Livingston City Pool will remain open until August.
