Great Falls, Mont. — Malmstrom Air Force Base gave NonStop Local a look at one of its new helicopters tied to the base’s nuclear security mission.
The aircraft is an MH-139A Grey Wolf assigned to the 40th Helicopter Squadron at Malmstrom Air Force Base. Its job in the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile mission includes moving specialized teams to different sites and following nuclear convoys to provide security.
Capt. JC Soto of the 40th Helicopter Squadron said the helicopter adds speed and capacity for that work.
"When it comes to nuclear security, we can deliver things faster, more people and quicker than any other capability here on Malmstrom," Soto said.
Soto said the Grey Wolves showed how Malmstrom continues to modernize nuclear security operations within Air Force Global Strike Command. He adds the Air Force is preparing to retire the UH-1N Huey after more than five decades of service.
