HELENA, Mont. — Starting July 1, Montanans can buy a new specialty license plate to raise money for wildlife crossings on highways.
According to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, the new plate is expected to bring in about $100,000 each year based on projected sales.
Each purchase sends a $20 contribution to the Wildlife Highway Crossings and Accommodations Account, which the 2025 Montana Legislature created and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks administered.
Officials said wildlife crossing structures such as overpasses and underpasses, along with fencing, could cut crashes involving deer, elk, moose and other animals by more than 90 percent. They said the projects also help keep migration routes connected and reduce costs tied to vehicle damage, medical bills and other expenses.
The plate features artwork from Kylie Bute, a June 2025 graduate of Gallatin High School in Bozeman, who won the Montana Big Game and Wildlife Highway Crossings License Plate Artwork Contest.
“My passion for art has always been about telling stories, and this design is a way to spread awareness of the importance of wildlife conservation and movement,” Bute said.
More information about buying Montana license plates is available through the Montana Motor Vehicle Division website.
