Montreal’s Centre Pierre-Charbonneau will become the centre of the ball hockey world August 21-23 as the LNHB hosts its biggest championship weekend yet. Some 300 players will showcase their skills during the three day event.
Former NHL players Maxime Talbot, Bruno Gervais and Alex Burrows will be on hand as the league’s men’s, women’s, junior and prospect divisions battle for championships in best-of-five series. “This is the biggest, the biggest ball hockey event ever held in Quebec,” Patric Ducharme co-founder of the LNHB said. “It’s the entire elite divisions, the Junior division, the elite of all the best juniors; the Women's division, all the best girls; and the Adult division, all the best guys.”
Saturday will feature All-Star action in the U11 through U17 categories, along with the Women’s All-Star Classic. “Since those categories are finished, we're having an all-star game with the best players in the league on Saturday,” Ducharme said.
The championship series will follow a professional hockey-style format, with Games 1 and 2 Friday, Games 3 and 4 Saturday and a deciding Game 5 Sunday, if necessary. The games will later be broadcast on RDS, marking a first for elite ball hockey. “The final is three of five,” he said. “Games one and two are on Friday. Then on Saturday it's all the all-star games, then the evening games are three and four, and if necessary, on Sunday it's game five.”
Organizers are promising a major-sports atmosphere, with entertainment and family activities throughout the weekend as the LNHB showcases the sport’s rapid growth. “Quebec is renowned for having the best dek hockey players in the world,” he said. We go to the world championships and pretty much always we win. We are the greatest power in the world.”
