The Tragically Hip, Gord Sinclair, Monkland, Gord Downie

The Tragically Hip's last concert, August 20, 2016, galvanized the nation.

Imagine Monkland, the name by which the NDG street festival now goes, was called The Flavours of Monkland 10 years ago. The new edition kicked off on Thursday, 10 years to the day of the Tragically Hip’s final concert, which was broadcast on a giant screen at the corner of Melrose, and all over the country on CBC.

“That date was always circled on this last tour,” says bass player Gord Sinclair. “We didn’t necessarily know how it was going to go.” It all hinged on how Downie was feeling. If at any point on the tour he had said that it was time to stop — as Terry Fox had a third of the way through his Marathon of Hope — that would have been it.
