As I pen these words, my heart goes out to the countless people in our nation and our world who are struggling just trying to put food on the table. The list of things that people are standing in need of are numerous, and we unfortunately have a government and a president who has little or no concern about the welfare of the American people.
We have seen how this administration has cut valuable services that are needed by the people of God. There is little or no concern for anybody other than himself and those in his circle. As the people of God, we are called on to be concerned about the least, the lost and the lonely. We must have a heart to care for people of all walks of life, whether they are immigrants or they live in our neighborhood. God has called us to have a heart for His people. We hear the words of the prophet Micah, “What doth the Lord require of thee but to do justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.”
We also read in the word of God, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.” That is what we have been called to do. We cannot be so concerned about ourselves that we forget our brothers and sisters. Our mission at Bethlehem is “to love God and serve people.”
I would argue strongly we cannot say we love God and not care for His people. If there was ever a time for the people of God to speak out against anything or anyone who would take away programs that seek to help people, it is now; or to see individuals treated as less than human. Not only should our hearts be heavy, but full of care.
This is not about poetics, this is about fulfilling the commandments of the Lord. Love your neighbor as yourself. The list of our responsibilities is many in the word of God. Jesus himself was concerned and showed empathy and compassion for people. When we say we are Christians it means we are Christ-like; and we know what Christ was like. The question is are we carrying out that same love and devotion.
In far too many cases we live in a world, it’s all about us. It should never be just about us; we are our brother’s keepers. We must demonstrate that love daily so God will get the glory.
