President-elect Donald J. Trump announced Sonny Perdue III, the former governor of Georgia, as his nomination for U.S. secretary of agriculture Jan. 19.
“Sonny Perdue is going to accomplish great things as Secretary of Agriculture,” said Trump in a news release. “From growing up on a farm to being governor of a big agriculture state, he has spent his whole life understanding and solving the challenges our farmers face, and he is going to deliver big results for all Americans who earn their living off the land.”
Perdue, 70, was born in Perry, Georgia, to a lifelong farmer and a classroom teacher. He earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine in 1971 from the University of Georgia. He served in U.S. Air Force before becoming a small business owner with a concentration on transportation and agribusiness. He served in the Georgia State Senate for 11 years and was Georgia Governor from 2003-11.
As head of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Perdue would oversee about 100,000 employees and about $140 billion across various programs.
