Woodward, Inc. WWD combines rapid earnings growth with expanding demand in commercial aerospace, marine transportation and data-center power generation. Management also raised fiscal 2026 earnings guidance after another quarter of double-digit sales growth.
The issue is price. WWD trades above its own historical valuation norms, while heavy capital spending, normalizing pricing and the China on-highway exit raise the execution bar for fiscal 2027.
Woodward's Growth Case Is Still Compelling
Management expects fiscal 2026 sales to grow 20%-23% and adjusted earnings to reach $9.30-$9.50 per share. The Zacks Consensus Estimate implies 20.9% sales growth and 36.4% earnings growth for the current fiscal year.
Third-quarter adjusted earnings increased 43.2% to $2.52 per share, while sales rose 21.2% to $1.11 billion. Those rates support a premium, but much future improvement may already be reflected in the stock.

WWD Trades Above Its Historical Norms
WWD trades at 29.6X trailing 12-month enterprise value to EBITDA, above its five-year median of 21.1X and the Zacks Aerospace sector's 27.8X. The S&P 500 multiple is 17.9X.
The stock also carries a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 39.7X and a Value Score of D. That leaves less room for slowing growth, weaker margins or delayed cash conversion.
Woodward Has Multiple Paths to Sustain Demand
Aerospace sales increased 19% in the third quarter, supported by 34% commercial original equipment growth and a 24% rise in commercial services. LEAP and GTF activity, legacy-engine servicing and higher aircraft production provide several demand channels.
Industrial sales advanced 26%, with power generation up 19% on data-center demand and oil and gas up 11% on liquefied natural gas infrastructure activity. RTX Corporation RTX spans commercial aerospace and defense through Collins Aerospace, Pratt & Whitney and Raytheon.
Parker-Hannifin Corporation PH supplies motion-control products and aftermarket support to aerospace manufacturers and maintenance providers.
WWD's Cash Flow Has Yet To Catch Up
Free cash flow reached $196 million through the first nine months, up 23%, while capital expenditures nearly doubled to $156 million. Higher inventory and receivables also limited the conversion of earnings into cash.
Woodward kept full-year free cash flow guidance at $300-$350 million even after raising earnings guidance. The unchanged forecast underscores meaningful capacity investments and working-capital needs.
Woodward's Capacity Spending Raises the Stakes
The Glatten expansion added fuel-injection capacity, while Spartanburg construction, service partnerships and automation are intended to raise throughput. Management targets reducing the need for about 1,000 incremental hires by 2029.
These projects could support future margins, but they must deliver productivity as companywide pricing normalizes to 3%-5% from about 8% in fiscal 2026. Castings, forgings and rare earth materials remain supply-chain concerns.
WWD Faces a 2027 Comparison Test
China on-highway generated $40 million of third-quarter sales and added about 90 basis points to Industrial margin. Woodward expects little fourth-quarter revenue as it completes the exit, creating a tougher comparison next year.
Commercial aftermarket demand can also vary by quarter, while the retroactive pricing adjustment that added about 100 basis points to Aerospace margin will not recur. Core Industrial growth of 19% provides an offset, but execution will matter more.
WWD's Ratings Support a Wait-and-See View
WWD's growth case remains credible, yet the valuation requires sustained sales, margin and cash-flow progress. The current balance of upside drivers and execution risks supports patience rather than an aggressive entry.
The stock carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), a Growth Score of B and a Momentum Score of A. Its VGM Score of C and Value Score of D temper those positives, supporting a wait-and-see stance until valuation or cash conversion becomes more favorable.
