“The food we serve at Little Bull… it’s very personal,” Diaz said. “It’s the kind of food that a Mexican person, born in Chicago, that traveled throughout the country, that ended up in Durham would make.”

“Gocciolina is my go-to,” he said. “Chef Aaron’s approach, prime ingredients and beautiful simplicity, is genuinely inspiring to me. It’s a small, tight operation and I love sitting at the bar and watching it all come together. I always leave happy.”

“They make everything in house, handmade noodles, sweets, all of it, and the craft throughout the menu is really something special,” he said. “The space is small and unassuming, which I love, but they are doing serious work in there.”

For drinks, he points to The Waiting Room, a tucked-away neighborhood bar with a thoughtful cocktail program.

“It’s a neighborhood spot, very quaint and a little off the beaten path,” Diaz said. “Head bartender Emmy Garcia puts real thought into her cocktail menu. These small spots are my people.”

“Look, Durham is full of incredible restaurants, but I would be doing myself a disservice if I did not start with Little Bull. It’s my spot, and I’m proud of it,” he said.

“Order a lot of small plates and share everything,” he said.

From there, the night moves into downtown. A short walk helps reset before heading to Annexe, a cocktail bar known for its DJs and relaxed energy. For those looking to extend the evening, Bar Virgile sits just upstairs, offering another opportunity to grab a bite.

“There is so much love for Durham,” Diaz said. “Everyone is so proud of being from Durham in what they do. It really tries to produce the best.”
