Whether through paid advertising or free media coverage, political parties and candidates will do their best to create the narrative they hope will motivate voters in the coming midterm elections. The top issues usually include some mix of monetary issues centered on the state of the economy, tax policy or jobs. Other times, social issues lead the way, including abortion, healthcare and education.

But no matter how campaigns try to frame their preferred topics, the issue of energy overrides all others. No single entity impacts almost everything in American life as does the availability, reliability and cost of energy.
