The Arkansas Department of Education launched a universal application system Tuesday for colleges and universities in the state.
The portal launched a little over a year after Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed the Arkansas ACCESS Act, which directed the department to create a “uniform application” for college admissions in the state.
Thirty-four public universities and colleges, and eight private schools, are currently accepting applications submitted through the ACCESS Portal, according to its website. The portal will communicate provisional admissions decisions to the students, as well as financial aid information.
The portal is currently available to enrolled public and charter school students applying for admission for the 2027-2028 academic year. Students attending private schools can begin using the portal when applying for the 2028-2029 academic year, with home schooled students and GED recipients gaining access the year after that.
Students can apply to up to five participating schools at no cost through the ACCESS portal. The portal will also “automatically populate” transcripts, grade point averages and test data for applying students.
“The Arkansas ACCESS Portal takes what used to be a confusing, repetitive college application process that would overwhelm students and families and streamlines it into a simple process,” Arkansas Secretary of Education Jacob Oliva said in the release.
The Arkansas ACCESS Act introduced several changes to higher education. The measure overhauled how higher education is funded, including a return-on-investment metric. Through rules created by the state’s Division of Higher Education, the metric links state funding for schools to factors like whether the schools have success in serving underrepresented students, and whether the credentials awarded to students are “aligned with state economic and workforce needs.”
