In the 1990’s, Kentucky set the pace for the nation in improving education outcomes. We led with a national following not unlike the heyday of University of Kentucky Wildcat fever; we were the ones to watch! We climbed from the bottom of the national rankings to the middle. Now, led by Kentucky’s educators who helped make that improvement happen – the players on the championship team court – Kentucky is positioned to take the next giant leap to the top tier of all states with new legislation enacted this past spring.

As the new school year begins, Kentucky’s public schools are growing from standards-based accountability, which led to the 1990’s improvement, to community-connected vibrant learning. Local innovation and community partnership are the levers of change and will ensure success of Kentucky’s move from foundational improvement in education to deeper learning that equips more students with the skills, knowledge and experiences they will need for future success and upward mobility.
