Democratic lawmakers and advocates gathered in front of the North Carolina legislative building Thursday to defend voting rights against what they say is growing pressure by Republicans to roll back years of progress. 

Thursday marked the 61st anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, a landmark law prohibiting discrimination in voting based on race, color, or language-minority status.
