MEAD, Wash. — The Spokane community has filled Mt. Spokane High School with donations for firefighters battling the Spokane Area Fires, prompting fire officials to ask residents to temporarily stop bringing bottled water and food.

Mt. Spokane High School is serving as the incident command base for the Spokane Area Fires, housing firefighters and members of Incident Management Team 7 from California.

Officials said that the outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming.

The school has received more food and bottled water than crews can currently use and officials are asking residents to pause those donations.

Instead, firefighters said that they could still use personal care items, including baby wipes, toiletries and other hygiene products.

Fire crews from across the United States have been deployed to Eastern Washington as firefighters continue battling multiple large wildfires that have destroyed homes, forced evacuations and threatened communities across Spokane and neighboring counties.
