SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Humane Society said it shifted from emergency fire response to one-on-one pet support as families across the area returned home and started measuring their losses.
The group reported it had worked at the Disaster Assistance Center at Shadle Park High School since August 6, handing out pet food and supplies, offering free microchipping and helping evacuees with urgent pet needs.
Now that the center was winding down, the organization said it launched a Pet Support Following the Spokane Fires request form so families could explain what help they needed for their animals.
Support could include replacement basics such as crates, carriers, beds, bowls, leashes, collars, harnesses and litter supplies, according to Spokane Humane Society. The organization also explained that help could be tailored to specific sizes, diets or other needs as resources allowed.
"This is going to be a long road for many families in our community," said Kristi Soto, director of development and marketing at Spokane Humane Society.
"Replacing dog beds or providing pet food, supplies, support and resources may feel small compared with everything someone is facing right now, but if we can take even one worry off their list, we want to do that," Soto said.
The organization said fire-related veterinary help might be available depending on each family's situation, available resources and veterinary capacity. It also confirmed that families who lost an animal in the fires could still get free cremation services through its partnership with West Coast Pet Memorial.Â
Spokane Humane Society said it was also looking at ways to help with pet deposits for temporary housing and rentals when an animal added to the cost of finding a place to stay.
"We don't yet know what every family will need as they return home and begin to understand what has been lost," Soto said. "That's why we're asking for people to let us know. We have an incredible community behind us as well as other organizations that have given us the ability to listen, adapt and respond as those needs become clearer."
