SHREVEPORT, La. — Winnie's Way is gearing up for its sixth annual 5K Rescue Run, a fundraising event dedicated to helping local rescue organizations care for dogs with special medical and behavioral needs.Founder Vicki Case said the nonprofit was inspired by Winnie, a rescue dog who was deaf, nearly blind, and had other special needs. After Winnie’s passing, the organization was created to help other rescue dogs receive the care they need to find loving homes.“What we do is raise funds for area rescue organizations when they take in a dog that has some special needs,” Case said. “We can provide them with a grant award that helps them offset some of their veterinary costs up front so that that dog can have its best chance at its forever home.”The sixth annual Winnie's Way 5K Rescue Run will be held Aug. 29 at the Arthur Ray Teague Parkway boat launch in Bossier City. Participants can run, walk, or even register as a “lazy dog sleeping supporter” to support the cause from home.The event will also feature adoptable dogs from local rescue groups, vendors, food trucks, and family-friendly activities. SHREVEPORT, La. — A longtime community tradition is set to return as First Baptist Church prepares for its annual “Red, White and Boom” fireworks celebration.The event, now in its 20th year, is designed to bring families together while honoring the nation’s freedoms.“It’s a free fireworks show that celebrates the freedoms we have in America,” said Pastor Dennis Sims, noting the event’s roots in both community connection and patriotism.The celebration will take place Sunday beginning at 6 p.m. at the church located near Allenby Road and Leonard Road. Guests can enjoy food trucks, live music, and activities for kids before a 30-minute fireworks show begins around 9 p.m.Sims says the event has grown over the years, now drawing hundreds of people from across the community and continuing to serve as a kickoff to Fourth of July celebrations across the area.
