MINDEN, La. - As the United States prepares to mark its 250th anniversary, communities in Webster Parish is launching a massive joint celebration, anchored by deep-rooted traditions and a return to spectacles not seen in decades.
The festivities kick off this weekend in Minden with the ninth annual "Grilling on Main" festival, an event that city boosters say spotlights a thriving, revitalized downtown. The celebration marks a dual milestone for the community, pairing the national semiquincentennial with the 190th anniversary of Minden’s founding.
"Minden is your small-town America, and we want to share all that Minden has with everyone," organizers said in a promotional broadcast detailing the events.
The Minden lineup features a children’s patriotic parade, a 5K run, a beer garden, and a "Duck Derby" at 7 p.m. Saturday, culminating in a fireworks display at 9 p.m. In a nod to the nation’s founding, both children and adults will be invited to sign a replica of the Declaration of Independence using a traditional quill pen.
Local historians track the area's intense patriotism back to its founding blueprint, noting that the parish developed sequentially through churches, schools, agriculture, and eventually a robust timber and manufacturing boom. Residents say that heritage fosters a unique appreciation for military sacrifices spanning from the Revolutionary War to the modern era.
Just north of Minden, the city of Springhill is preparing for its own massive Independence Day weekend, headlined by a milestone event.
The city will host its "Freedom Festival" on Friday, July 3, featuring live entertainment, food trucks, and a splash pad, followed by the Freedom Farmers Market on the morning of July 4. The weekend will culminate in Springhill’s first official fireworks show in 20 years.
"We are just a community that is full of pride for America," Springhill organizers said. "And with the 250th coming up, we just couldn't let it pass without just a huge explosion of excitement for our freedoms."
For regional travelers, the dual-city celebrations offer a concentrated dose of classic Americana that locals argue cannot be matched across the three-state Ark-La-Tex region.
"Yep, we may not have snow-covered mountains and white sandy beaches," a parish representative noted, "but we've got some treasures you've got to see to believe."
