MINDEN, La. — A 62-year-old Minden woman says she has been dealing with a series of maintenance problems at her apartment, including a broken air conditioner, a non-working stove and mold. Donna Salter, a resident of Azalea Terrace Apartments, says she has been sleeping on her living room couch for the past several weeks because the central air conditioning in her two-bedroom apartment has not been working properly. “Now it’s out again,” Salter said. “It’s going on three weeks.” Salter says she has submitted multiple work orders to apartment management requesting repairs. She says the only temporary relief came when management provided a portable air-conditioning unit after she contacted the owner. “I said, ‘Ricky, how can you expect me to just live here like this? Can you at least bring a unit and put in a window?’” Salter said. She says the portable unit does little to cool her entire apartment. Salter also says she has been living without a working stove and has found mold growing inside the apartment. She showed pictures of the mold and says she has repeatedly asked management to address the problems. She claims her complaints have also resulted in eviction notices, although she says those notices were never followed up on. “They get upset with me over complaining...,” Salter said. “I come home, then I get an eviction.” The owner of Azalea Terrace Apartments declined to comment when contacted by KTBS. A former property manager, Chantacy Lauderdale, says she was fired on Aug. 3. Lauderdale believes her termination was connected to her efforts to advocate for residents and address outstanding maintenance requests. “I just feel like I was fired because I was advocating for the tenants,” Lauderdale said. Lauderdale says she noticed numerous work orders that had remained unfulfilled for months and raised concerns about the lack of a maintenance worker regularly coming onto the property. Salter says she has tried contacting anyone she believes might be able to help, but she has not seen anyone inspect her apartment. “I just can’t seem to get any help," Salter said. Salter says she wants the problems fixed not only for herself but for other residents at Azalea Terrace who she believes are experiencing similar concerns.
