MINDEN, La. -- Recent wildfires across Europe and several western states are serving as a reminder that fire conditions can develop almost anywhere, including northwest Louisiana.
After weeks of heavy rainfall earlier this summer, lush grass growth has created a new challenge for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development. As those grasses dry out in the summer heat, they become potential fuel for brush fires while also creating visibility concerns for drivers.
Residents have voiced frustration on social media and in emails about tall grass along Shreveport-area roadways, particularly near merge points where it can block drivers' views of oncoming traffic.
"You know, people are frustrated with the aesthetic look of it and concerned about safety as well. And that's totally understandable," said Erin Buchanan, public information officer for DOTD's northwest districts.
DOTD crews spent Tuesday mowing problem areas around Minden as part of an expanded effort to address the issue. The agency has also increased its mowing capacity by bringing in contractors and additional crews.
"The contractor who typically mows the interstates is mowing, also bringing in some additional crews from out of state. And then our own maintenance units that typically don't mow the interstates and mow all of their state routes, they're also on the interstates," Buchanan said.
Fire officials say the dry conditions make it especially important for residents to understand local burn restrictions and use caution with outdoor activities.
"Yes, Caddo is under a voluntary burn ban. Shreveport is essentially always under a burn ban unless you meet certain requirements for any open outdoor burning," said Jeffrey Witte, fire prevention officer with the Shreveport Fire Department, who mentioned qualifying residents must seek out special permits.
Witte said the combination of low humidity, hot temperatures and dry vegetation can allow fires to spread quickly, especially in neighborhoods where homes are close together.
"So low humidity, dry air, hot air, and we have a lot of densely populated neighborhoods. So you're right next to your neighbor. So, again, the activities that we're doing in our yards inadvertently could affect and spread to a neighboring property," Witte said.
Officials encourage residents to stay informed about local burn restrictions, avoid activities that could spark fires and use extra caution while the region remains under elevated fire conditions.
