Frustrated foster parents vented to a panel of Louisiana lawmakers this week about seeing less money from the state to care for kids in state custody. The news came as a surprise to the legislators, who added almost $17 million to the state budget this spring to boost the monthly per-child payments to those families.

Effective July 1, foster care board rate payments from the state increased from around $600 a month to $900. But at the start of this month, the Department of Children and Family Services stopped reimbursing families for incidental expenses, including school uniforms and supplies, child car seats and other day-to-day needs. Parents also were no longer allowed to claim mileage expenses for bringing their foster children to school, doctor’s visits and other necessary travel.
