TEXARKANA, Ark. -- The Marine Corps League Detachment 1149 hosted a barbecue cookoff on Saturday in Texarkana to raise funds to help area veterans.
The Arkansas Marine Corps League is a veteran national organization which is primarily comprised of Marine Corps veterans, including those that were active duty, reserves, Fleet Marine Force Brothers in the Navy, and associate members who volunteer to help support those veterans.
The barbecue was a memorial for Pvt. Wesley Burris and was held at Texarkana's VFW Post 4562.
"The second annual Wesley Burris BBQ competition, he was a veteran in the Marine Corps, and I joined the Marine Corps League last year as a way to carry on his legacy," said Lorrie West. "I just think it's a great way to contribute to the community and give back the way that he did."
The Texarkana Marine Corps League is looking for new members for the organization and its mission this year is Toys for Tots for eight counties.
