WASHINGTON — State lawmakers across the nation are enacting legislation to restrict student screen time in classrooms, building on recent bipartisan momentum surrounding school cellphone bans.

Four states have passed measures to limit or regulate device usage for students ranging from early childhood programs through fifth grade. Iowa established a 60-minute daily ceiling on digital instruction for kindergarten through fifth grade, while carving out exceptions for special education, computer science and standardized testing. Utah directed its state board of education to draft grade-specific regulations restricting screen usage in early grades and eliminating one-to-one student-device ratios in elementary classrooms.
