Shoppers in Texas and Oklahoma can take advantage of annual sales tax holidays this weekend to save on back-to-school essentials.
Texas and Oklahoma will both hold their sales tax holidays Friday through Sunday.
In Texas, qualifying items include clothing, footwear, and elementary or secondary school backpacks priced less than $100 per item, along with most school supplies under $100. Under Senate Bill 1415, the annual holiday takes place beginning on the first Friday in August.
In Oklahoma, shoppers can purchase qualifying clothing and footwear priced under $100 per item without paying state sales tax.
Across both states, exclusions apply to accessories, special athletic wear, protective equipment, and rentals.
Arkansas held its sales tax holiday last weekend.
Louisiana does not have a back-to-school sales tax holiday.
For many families, back-to-school season means figuring out how to pay for another expense. According to consulting firm KPMG, the average spend per child on back-to-school items is $380 for the 2023 school year, up 20% from last year. What’s more is the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates families will spend a total of $890 on school supplies.
